In Al-Ittihad’s comprehensive 4-2 victory over Abha on Friday, Karim Benzema notched three goals and provided an assist, capping the reigning champions’ first game back after coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure.

Al-Ittihad won its first league game in six attempts, increasing their point total to 24, which puts them in fifth place. Abha, on the other hand, is in 13th place with 13 points.

After being fouled inside the box, the French striker started the hat-trick in the 38th minute with a penalty kick. Karl Toko Ekambi, a Cameroonian striker for Abha, equalized in the 51st minute with a follow-up shot after teammate Saad Bguir’s attempt was deflected by Al-Ittihad’s Brazilian goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe.
But three minutes later, Al-Ittihad took the lead again thanks to a cheeky heel pass from Benzema to teammate Igor Coronado.

After a counterattack, Benzema scored his second goal of the game with a strong shot from inside the penalty area in the 68th minute. After Coronado’s cross, he finished one minute later to complete the hat-trick with a close-range shot.

Five minutes from time, Abha’s Fahad Al-Jumayah used a header to cut the lead.
