Preview: Al Ittihad Vs Al Ahli

When Al Ittihad hosts Al-Ahli on Friday night, they will be attempting to overtake them in the Saudi Professional League standings.

The team led by Matthias Jaissle travels to King Abdullah Sports City hoping to break their recent losing streak against the host team this weekend.

Al Ittihad was forced to lament their lack of aggression in front of goal after Al Fayha held them to a scoreless draw in their matchup last Friday at the King Fahd International Stadium.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team had almost 65% of the ball possession and dominated for the majority of the game, but they were unable to seriously threaten the hosts’ goal before accepting a share of the spoils.

Al Ittihad struggled offensively for the second game in a row, and on September 26, they narrowly defeated Al Kholood in a King’s Cup last-32 match after a 1-1 tie after 120 minutes.

This dry period has coincided with star striker Karim Benzema’s absence, who has missed the Tigers’ last three games despite having contributed to nine goals in his first 10 games after joining in the summer.

Al Ittihad Vs Al Ahli: H2H

Al Ittihad, on the other hand, have won their past five games without losing, recording one draw and four victories, including a convincing 3-0 triumph against AGMK in their AFC Champions League Group C opening on September 18.

Al-Ahli and Al Ettifaq battled to a scoreless draw at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium on Saturday after neither team capitalized on any of their clear-cut opportunities.

Before that, on September 26, Jaissle’s team defeated Al Ain 3-2 to secure their place in the round of 16 of the King’s Cup thanks to a goal from Sumaihan Al-Nabit in the 39th minute and a brace from Firas Al-Buraikan in the first half.

After exploding into the new season with four victories in their first four games, Al-Ahli has now achieved just one win in their past four league games following the outcome on Saturday.

Despite this decline in performance, the Royal are still sixth in the Professional League rankings with 16 points out of a possible 24, trailing Al Ittihad by three points and four positions.

Al-Ahli, on the other hand, entered the weekend without a victory in either of their previous four contests with Espirito Santo’s team, losing three and drawing one since a 2-1 triumph in August 2020.

Team News

Both the 32-year-old custodian Abdullah Al-Jadani and the Egyptian defender Ahmed Hegazy are still out of commission for Al Ittihad due to cruciate ligament injuries.

Last time out, against Al Fayha, Ahmed Bamasud was forced off due to injury shortly after the hour mark. The 27-year-old full-back is questionable for Espirito Santo’s team.

The former Real Madrid striker, Benzema, has been out since suffering an injury in the 3-0 victory over Al Okhdood on September 14. He is questionable for this weekend’s match.

Al-Ahli, meanwhile, will play without veteran midfielder Abdullah Otayf, who has been sidelined since late August due to a cruciate ligament tear.

Despite the poor outcome from last weekend, we anticipate Jaissle to select a similar lineup on Friday, with the former Premier League front three of Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Gabri Veiga and Franck Kessie should continue to play in the middle of the park, and Roger Ibanez and Abdulbaset Al-Hindi are likely to link up as the centre-backs to protect Edouard Mendy in goal.

Al Ittihad Vs Al Ahli: Prediction

Al Ittihad and Al-Ahli will enter the weekend hoping to pick up where they left off after both teams lost their previous games. Jaissle’s team has lost its last two away games, thus despite their strength in the attacking third of the field, we think the hosts will continue to dominate this match.
